I am writing to urge you to immediately release lawyer and mother of two Nasrin Sotoudeh. She is serving a six-year prison sentence in Evin Prison, Tehran. Her imprisonment is based solely on her peacefully exercising her rights to freedom of expression and association, including her work as a defence lawyer and her human rights advocacy. On 9 January 2011, Nasrin Sotoudeh was convicted in a Revolutionary Court of 'spreading propaganda against the system' and 'acting against national security', including being a member of the Centre for Human Rights Defenders. Nasrin Sotoudeh has denied all charges against her. She was also banned from practicing law and travelling for 20 years, reduced to 10 years on appeal. Nasrin Sotoudeh's health has been weakened by hunger strikes held in protest against her arrest and detention conditions. She is widely respected for her efforts on behalf of juveniles facing the death penalty and for her representation of prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders. Nasrin Sotoudeh’s husband Reza Khandan and one of her lawyers, Nasim Ghanavi, have also been subjected to repeated harassment by your authorities because of their advocacy on her behalf. Both her husband and their 13-year-old daughter, Mehraveh Khandan, had a travel ban imposed on them in 2012. Please immediately and unconditionally release Nasrin Sotoudeh and overturn her conviction and sentence. Until she is released, please ensure that Nasrin Sotoudeh has regular access to her family and lawyers of her choosing. You should also lift the foreign travel bans placed on her husband and daughter. Thank you.
